THE hosts of a garden party 75 years ago were fortunate enough to have a ballroom at their disposal after rain made dancing outside impossible.
The Journal of 1934 reported: “A garden fete in aid of the cricket club was held in the grounds of Tredington Manor, by kind permission of Captain and Mrs H Guthrie.
“Owing to the rain the afternoon programme had to be somewhat curtailed and the opening ceremony abandoned.
“Later, however, the weather cleared, and the attendance increased and all the various amusements were very well patronised.
“Dancing on the lawn was out of the question after the heavy rain of the afternoon but Mrs Guthrie very kindly placed the ballroom at the disposal of the visitors.
“This was greatly appreciated by a large company and in spite of an unfavourable start the event was quite a success and resulted in a substantial increase to the funds of the club.
“Music was supplied by the Vagabonds Orchestra.”
