“SHADY spots were at a premium in the gardens of Luggershill, Broadway,” the Journal reported 75 years ago, “when glorious weather aided a garden fete organised by a committee of Broadway PCC to defray an adverse balance of £150 on Broadway Churchyard Extension Fund.
“The fete was held at Luggershill by kind invitation of Mr and Mrs Clement Parsons. A number of stalls were artistically arranged about the lawn while sideshows added the spice of amusement to a splendidly organised event.
“Lady Eyres Monsell declared the fete open. She was welcomed by the Rev V H Patrick, Vicar of Broadway, who went on to refer to the object for which the fete was promoted.
“Some years ago, he said, they found their churchyard was too full and they looked for a new site. Eventually, the Misses Hingley gave a piece of land beyond the old church. Through the kindness of Mrs Rees Price, a wall had been erected, and lately she had given a very delightful resting place in memory of her husband and daughter. Dr Millett had provided a beautiful lych gate in memory of his father, while other kind friends had provided a yew hedge.
“Lady Eyres Monsell congratulated everyone concerned on the success of their arrangements.”
