Village’s bid to maintain its identity

Blockley Parish Council was dismayed at the prospect of the village losing its name from the telephone book.

A letter from the Post Office told the council 30 years ago that with the construction of an automatic exchange at Blockley next year the village would be listed under Evesham (as Chipping Campden already is).

The Journal of 1979 reported: “Sir Robert Lusty said he felt this should be resisted. Apart from, the village losing its name from the directory, it was also being put under a telephone exchange in a town 15 miles away in another county.

“If Blockley had to be linked with somewhere else it should be Moreton-in-Marsh, which was the postal address.

“The chairman, Mr J Malin, pointed out that Moreton came under Oxford Post Office. Blockley, Campden and Evesham were under Worcester Post Office.

“The council decided to write to the Post Office urging that the identity of the village should be kept.”
