100 Years Ago June 26, 1909 The quarterly meetings of the Wesleyan Circuit were held at Mickleton on Wednesday, the proceedings opening with a local preachers’ meeting at 2pm, which was followed by the Circuit Board at 3pm. The Rev W Griffiths presided, while the Rev W Floyd acted as secretary. there was a very good attendance, The membership of the circuit showed a slight increase on the quarter. The financial statement was presented by the Junior Steward (Mr H Masters), and was considered very satisfactory, the circuit rally which was held at Quinton showing a net profit of £8 12s 7d. Votes of thanks were presented to the local preachers for their voluntary pulpit services, and to Mr. F. Eccles for kindly providing tea at the circuit rally. The members of the meeting were entertained to tea by Mr John Taylor who, with the ladies who presided at the tables, was heartily thanked for his kindness.
75 Years Ago June 26, 1934 This morning, 41 people were rendered homeless when 10 cottages at the rear of Russell Workshops, Broadway, were destroyed by fire. The cottages comprised a row of thatched and weather-boarded dwellings occupied by employees of the Russell Workshops Ltd., and the fire was first noticed at about 11am in the middle of the row. Within a few minutes the flames had spread to both sides of the seat of the outbreak, and by 11.30 the whole row was involved in a conflagration without precedent in the district in recent years. The Broadway Fire Brigade was assisted by the Evesham and Pershore Rural District Council’s Joint Fire Brigade, the Stratford-on-Avon and Blockley brigades, but their combined forces could do little to save the property already involved, and they concentrated upon saving adjoining buildings.
30 Years Ago June 28, 1979 On public display for the first time tomorrow at St Peter’s church, Winchcombe, is a manuscript written by an unknown monk at Winchcombe Abbey during the 12th century. The manuscript, extracts of writing by St Augustine, is part of a three-day exhibition of church silver, parish registers dating back to the 14th century, and a flower festival being held in aid of church roof funds. Also on show will be part of a photographic collection belonging to Mr Bert Butler, of Winchcombe, who has collected over the years photographs of local historical interest. The flower festival will include displays by two national demonstrators, said Mrs Jenny Bailey, who is responsible for the church floral decorations for the festival. The vicar of St Peter’s, the Rev R Appleton, said the church roof appeal fund was progressing and they had recently received a grant from the Department of the Environment for the work on the north roof.
