Princely sum for river work

BOURTON Parish Council 100 years ago agreed to clean the bed of the river Windrush in the village centre – but only as long as the work did not cost more than £1.

The Journal’s report of the meeting in 1909 continued: “A letter was read from the county council surveyor in reply to the clerk’s letter, complaining of the state of the road in Lansdowne, stating that the letter would receive attention.

“Replies were read from the Little Rissington, Great Rissington, Clapton and Wyck on the subject of the proposal to provide a fire engine for Bourton and the district.

“A report was also read from the Burial Acts Committee which was adopted and an order upon the overseers for £10 signed.”
