Nile veteran’s death aged 73


A DECORATED war veteran who fought with the Grenadier Guards in Egypt until catching malaria died 75 years ago.

The Journal of 1934 reported: “The death took place on Monday of war veteran Mr Thomas Payne of Aston Road, Campden.

“The deceased, who was in his 73rd year, was a Campdonian by birth and well-known and respected in the town, where apart from Army service, he lived all his life.

“He was a man of fine physique and whilst in his teens enlisted in the Grenadier Guards in 1880.

“He served in the Egyptian campaign for which he held the Queen’s medal and Khedives Star.

“He was wounded at the battle of Tell-el-Kebir and saw Colonel Burnaby killed.

“He was also in the British force in subsequent operations up the river Nile that were surrounded and badly cut up.

“In 1885 he was invalided from the services owing to the effects of malaria and returned to Campden, where the same year he married Mrs Sarah Cherry, who survives him.”
