Perfect weather for outdoor service saw not one candle put out by the wind

THE Journal gave a highly detailed account of a Roman Catholic procession and service held in a Cotswold town 75 years ago.

The report of 1934 said: “The Corpus Christi procession at St Catharine’s Church, Campden, deferred from the Sunday within the Octave of the feast, took place. Headed by the crossbearer the procession went round the inside of the church first, and then round the outside.

“At the angle formed by the chancel and the Lady chapel a temporary altar was set up, and here a pause was made while hymns were sung and Benediction was given. The evening was perfect for the purpose, and what air there was stirring was not sufficient to extinguish the candles burning on the altar.

“Father Connick, from Foxcote, carried the Monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament.

“The canopy bearers were Messrs W Thornton, A Stanbrook, F Pieters and T Brotheridge.

“The children in white dresses and veils were conspicuous, while a touch of colour as added by the blue cloaks of some of the ‘Children of Mary’ and the crimson of four children acting as strewers of flowers.

“The Corpus Christi hymns, Lauda Sion and Pange Lingua were creditably sung by the choir during the procession, while the Te Deum that was sung in the church afterwards by the whole congregation was full and fervent.”
