100 Years Ago June 19, 1909 A VERY amusing entertainment took place at Moreton on Tuesday evening, when a singing contest took place for a live pig, given by the proprietors of Chipperfield’s Royal Show, which was on a visit to the town. The contest drew a very full house. The conditions were for the singer to hold the pig under his arm and sing either a comic or sentimental song; the one who held the pig and sang the best song to be the winner. There were only five competitors, and needless to say the efforts of each one as he tried to hold the pig and sing caused roars of laughter. Eventually the pig was awarded to Mr J Invine, of Bourton-on-the-Hill, who sang Stop our tickling Jock and fairly brought down the house. The pig was about three score live weight.

75 Years Ago June 16, 1934 At their meeting on Thursday last, Stow Rural District Council, received a letter from Stow Urban District Council enquiring whether there would be any objection on their part to a scheme for augmenting Stow water supply involving taking water from Lower Swell. The Urban District Council forwarded with their letter an engineer’s report on the possibilities of such a scheme in which it was stated that the spring supplying a portion of Lower Swell offered an abundant supply. He recommended that permission be obtained to gauge and sample the spring with a view to negotiations being opened for its acquisition. He had no doubt that sufficient water could be pumped up to Stow to supply all needs, either as a main supply, with the present supply as a stand-by, or vice-versa.

30 Years Ago June 21, 1979 There was a full house at the Victoria Hall, Bourton, on Saturday for the annual choosing of the carnival queen. Thirteen candidates took part, appearing first in ordinary wear, then in evening dress, and the number was then reduced to seven. After Mr Roy Grave, chairman of Bourton Carnival Committee, had chatted to each of the seven to give the judges some idea of the girls’ personality, the final choice was made, the winner being Jane Daniels, of Old Gloucester Road, Bourton. She is aged 14 and a pupil of Bourton Vale Secondary School, her interests being horse riding, archaeology and pop music, especially Elvis Presley. Jane will preside over the events during Bourton’s carnival week from June 30 to July 8. Her two attendants will be Jackie Stewart, aged 17, and Caroline Tanner, 17.
