Mystery deaths of fine-looking trout

the mysterious death of fish in the river Cam at Chipping Campden and Paxford was being investigated 30 years ago.

The Journal of 1979 reported: “On at least three occasions dead fish, including trout, have been floating in the stream as far upstream as the Park Road area of Campden.

“Keith Ashfield, a water bailiff, for the Severn Trent water authority, said that investigations were carried out and water samples taken for analysis.

“The death of the trout has been a blow to Severn Trent and to Mr Ashfield. They have been encouraging trout in the river and have now seen their efforts wasted.

“David Birch, of Pudlington Mill, Paxford, showed the Journal several dozen dead but otherwise fine-looking trout found at the Mill on Saturday.

“He said: ‘Kevin Righton reported seeing dead fish in the Cam last Saturday and we went to have a look and found dozens more.’ “Dennis Stokes, a district councillor, said he and a neighbour found dead trout in the river at the bottom of their gardens in Park Road, Campden, on a previous occasion. Ivor Morris had also found trout at the grille by the Guild.

“Mr Stokes said it was hard to understand what could be killing the fish on different occasions and in different stretches of the river.

“He had reported the matter to the environmental health department of Cotswold District Council.”
