A REPORT in the Journal 75 years ago about the spring Stow Fair gives an insight into how much trade and commerce the time-honoured event brought into the Cotswolds.
The report of 1934 said: “For the two-day annual Stow Fair sale and show, Messrs. Tayler, Fletcher and Villar secured a good entry, their catalogue comprising 235 horses.
“The first day’s sale consisted of 65 hunters, hacks, cobs and ponies, for which the demand was good and a large number changed hands.
“Cobs ranged from 30 guineas down to 20 guineas; hunter ponies 25 guineas down to 15 guineas; other ponies 12 guineas down to eight guineas.
“The second day’s sale comprised 170 valuable cart horses and colts, including 100 grand young geldings and fillies mostly suitable for town work.
“The quality and type was up to the high standard generally seen at this popular auction.
“The trade throughout exceeded expectations and over 80 per cent of the horses were sold, the chief prices being 61 guineas, 60 guineas (several times) and 59 guineas (several times), and from 35 guineas down to 15 guineas for older working horses.
“The market square was full of amusements, stalls and shows, and Saturday, which was a glorious day, was the best May fair day for many years.”
