100 Years Ago May 22, 1909 On Wednesday evening a meeting was held in the schoolroom to consider the scheme proposed by the Charity Commissioners for the regulation of the Keyte Charity, and to decide whether or not the proposed scheme should be applied for by the trustees. The scheme was outlined as follows:- (1) The money to be divided in equal shares among the twenty recipients. (2) The recipients are to be poor persons of good character, resident in the township of Ebrington. (3) No person is to be entitled to claim periodical re-election as a right. (4) Instead of paying the whole amount of his or her share to a recipient, the trustees are to have power to expend the whole or part of the benefit as they think fit. Note:- The sum to be divided annually is not to be less than £80 and the Earl of Harrowby will secure this sum to the satisfaction of the Commissioners on his property in the Ebrington parish.
75 Years Ago May 19, 1934 At the half-yearly meeting of the Four Shires Guild of Bellringers, held at Mickleton on Saturday, the competitors were Mickleton (holders of the challenge shield), Wolford (holders of the Spencer-Jones challenge cup), Aston Cantlow and Ebrington. Proceedings started at 2pm with the competition ringing. After all four bands had rung, a service was held in St Lawrence’s Church. The Vicar of Mickleton, Rev. F.G. Lacey, officiated. After the service an excellent tea was provided in King George’s Hall, where 34 sat down. The judges, Mr. J. Hall, of Bretforton, and Mr W. Heath, of Willersey, gave the result of the day’s ringing as follows:- Mickleton, 289 points; Aston Cantlow, 198; Ebrington, 235; Wolford, 285. After the report, Mr Heath said he hoped all bands would adopt the “open hand stroke” method of ringing, as it greatly improved the striking.
30 Years Ago May 24, 1979 If Chipping Campden approves, a £45,000 scheme for improving the town’s pavements – from both a safety and aesthetic point-of-view – will go ahead in September. The scheme is to be carried out by Gloucestershire County Council which is keen to hear from any local paving firms who could carry out on sub-contract the skilled work of laying the paving slabs. The pavement scheme, which has been organised by a committee consisting of members of Campden Town Council and the Campden Society, was unveiled before a meeting of organisations in Campden Town Hall, and presided over by Mr R.L. Leigh, a member of the committee. Mr Leigh said that large parts of the pavement had been overlaid by tarmac and conditions were often bad. Nor did the pavements enhance the setting of the fine architecture of the town.
