100 Years Ago May 15, 1909 THE annual holiday of the children attending the Council School at Long Compton was celebrated on Friday in glorious weather. Much interest had been taken by them in the event, and flowers were contributed in abundance. At 9.30am a procession was formed at the school, headed by a lovely garland. Next came the May Queen, Lizzie Taylor, who was attired in white muslin with mauve bows and green under-skirt, also a wreath of marguerites and violets. She was attended by a band of maidens, each becomingly attired and carrying bouquets. The handsome school banner and some gay flags composed of bunting helped to produce an extremely pretty effect. The village was travelled from end to end, merry songs being sung at the houses of the parishioners. At 4.30pm some 103 children heartily partook of the liberal supplies of cake, bread and butter and tea provided.
75 Years Ago May 12, 1934 AN important step towards bringing Campden water matters to a successful issue was taken by Campden Rural District Council at their annual meeting on Wednesday in the acceptance, subject to the approval of the Ministry of Health, of the joint water committee’s scheme. The newly-formed joint water committee for Campden reported that at a meeting on April 25 the chairman (Mr W Stokes) reviewed the whole position in regard to alternative proposals for the augmentation of Campden supply with particular reference to the two schemes under consideration – the acquisition of springs on Campden House Estate and the sinking of a borehole higher up the hill. The committee expressed themselves in favour of acquiring the springs rather than the borehole scheme.
30 years Ago May 17, 1979 MORETON parish council is to make a last-ditch stand against a Cotswold district council plan to build 19 houses in Old Town, a site the parish feels should be used for light industry. The application to build the houses came before the last meeting of the planning committee and could easily have been decided then: however, it was deferred for a month. Dr I Reekie, convener of Moreton Parish Council’s planning committee, told this week’s parish council meeting that the parish council had said all along that the site should be used for light industry. It was very important to see that jobs were provided locally. Mr M J Rees said the scheme was so highly advanced that it would cause considerable upset if it were opposed now. However, the council decided to object to the scheme and to spell out its reasons for preferring light industry on this site – reasons that had been explained to the district council over a long period of time.
