The wet summer seemed to have been more beneficial to fungi than to many other crops, 44 years ago and there were several reports of outsize puff balls having been found. One of the largest was discovered in a field near Moreton in Marsh by two boys Richard Henshaw (right) and Christopher Howe, who were both living at Stockwells, Moreton in Marsh. This puff ball, pictured, had a circumference of 3ft 8in and weighed 8lb 5oz. (Picture from our 1965 files).

Although several of those who had kindly promised to help were unable to do so, Mrs Jacson was able, with the assistance of her sisters, the Hons Edith and Mary Littleton, her cousin, Miss Edith Littleton, and Mr C F Bottomley, to present an attractive and interesting programme, the more so as all the performers were new to a Campden audience. The first item both afternoon and evening was a duologue entitled The crystal gazer, in which the Hon Edith Littleton and the Hon Mary Littleton were very good.

100 Years Ago January 29. 1910 A very enjoyable social evening was spent by the members of the recently formed Long Compton Choral Society, the higher education and woodwork classes and their friends. The function was organised by Mrs Cotton (headmistress of the council schools, teacher of the higher education class, and conductor of the choral society). The company numbered over 60. Singing, dancing and games were indulged in, and perhaps the greatest attraction of the evening was the bioscope and gramophone, very kindly lent and operated by the manager and assistant of “Lloyd’s Van,” which has been staying in the village. The choral society sang a glee, and as Saturday dawned (the anniversary of the King’s succession) the whole of the national Anthem.

100 Years Ago January 22, 1910 A building situated on the hill between Longborough and Condicote called Luckley Hill Farm, was burnt to the ground on Tuesday. Two men working on an adjacent farm had just finished their dinner about 12.30pm, when one of them noticed smoke coming out from this building. They immediately went across to it. The doors were all fastened, so with an iron bar they burst it open, when they say that the contents, wheat straw, was well ablaze. They got out a scuffle and other farm implements that could be saved, when other help arrived. The bailiff (Mr Lister) despatched a man on horseback for the Stow Fire Brigade, which was very smart on turning out. Meanwhile the men were carrying water from a pool 300 or 400 yards away; by doing so saved the fire from spreading to a rick in the yard.
