Railway death brings service to standstill

RAIL services between Worcester and London were brought to a standstill yesterday after a man died in front of a train.

The man was hit by the 10.22 London Paddington to Hereford service.

The incident left 80 passengers stranded on the train while emergency services attended the scene.

The incident happened near a bridge over the line at Dorn, near Moreton-in-Marsh, at about 12.20pm.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. British Transport Police said it was not treating the death as suspicious.

Rail passengers experienced major disruptions on the service between Hereford and London Paddington, while 80 people were left stranded on the stationary train for more than two-and-a-half hours.

A Network Rail fitter assessed the damage caused to the train and carried out repairs before its journey was allowed to continue at about 3pm.

The service terminated at Worcester Shrub Hill where further examinations were due to be carried out.

Replacement transport was provided and the first train to be up and running on the line was the 14.09 service from Worcester to Paddington.

Normal service was resumed at about 4.45pm.
