No town fun fair

A CONTROVERSIAL fun fair which had been due to arrive in Stow later this month has been cancelled.

The fair was set to be held in the Square for three days from Friday, October 26 – the day after Stow Horse Fair – but applicant Perry Hartwell did not apply for a road closure in time for the deadline.

Charlotte Merryfield, Gloucestershire County Council spokesman, said: “We never received an application and we would need 12 weeks notice for an application to be successful.”

Residents had requested a fun fair after not having one in the town for 15 years but the plans caused uproar with some traders including hotelier Jason Allen, owner of The Old Stocks Hotel, who said the fair would cost him valuable custom.

Stow Mayor Robin Jones said: “We did our best. I’m disappointed for the residents.”

Mr Allen declined to comment.
