Sheep noses or Isaac Newton?

SNOWSHILL Manor is hosting a rare opportunity to see, taste and buy some of Britain’s forgotten apple varieties this weekend.

Visitors will be able to find out what connects Sheep’s Noses, Early Strawberries, Isaac Newton and Greensleeves at the venue’s Apple Weekend today and tomorrow.

The event comes after a difficult year for apple growers, who have been hit by the wet and cold summer, resulting in a poor harvest.

Colin Davidson, visitor services manager, said: “Most of us can only name three or four types of apple.

We will have over a hundred varieties, all with different colours, sizes and flavours.”

The garden team will be on hand to answer questions and visitors will be able to taste fresh and cooked apples and juice pressed on the day along with cider.

The team at Old Farm, Dorn, near Moreton, have used Snowshill apples for a pork and apple sausage.
