Country's top brass on its way to festival

BANDS from across the country are heading to Pershore for this year’s Midsummer Brass festival.

The event, one of the largest in the UK, is being held at four venues around the town from 10am on Saturday, July 21.

Concerts will take place in the Abbey, the Angel Inn and Baptist Church and there will also be free performances at Chapman Court, outside Asda.

Adrian White, one of the organisers, said this year is set to be very special.

“We’re really looking forward to the first appearances of the Scottish Open Champions and 2012 National Finalists Tongwynlais Temperance band,” he said.

“All in all, there are six national finalists appearing and we have a host of popular local bands without which Pershore would never be the same. All in all 27 bands will play throughout the day.”

A special feature of the event is the eight bands taking part in the national, Brass the Baton, which will see participating bands playing different versions of a newly commissioned piece of music called Going the Distance as a celebration of this year’s Olympiad. The music has been played across the country and bands have passed a baton to simulate the Olympic flame in the run up to the games.
