Olympic Torch returns to county

Joanne Simon carries the Olympic torch in Evesham Joanne Simon carries the Olympic torch in Evesham

THOUSANDS of people gave the Olympic Torch relay a warm red, white and blue welcome to Evesham.

There were Union flags as far as the eye could see as the torch entered the town at Greenhill before going past Evesham station, along the High Street, Abbey Road, over Abbey Bridge and along Cheltenham Road.

Fred Kaler, the chairman of the Evesham and District Pensioners Association, had the honour of being the only torchbearer from the town.

The 76-year-old has headed a number of campaigns to highlight issues for local senior citizens.

More to follow.

Absolutely brilliant atmosphere and turn out, well done Evesham! Not quite sure why we needed two Nigerian runners down the High Street, when there's so many local deserving people who could have carried the torch, but a brilliant event none the less.

I must admit that I thought that at first, but I understand that that when you knew why and heard their tales, they also deserved their honor.
