THE OWNERS of a north Cotswold hotel who said car satellite navigation systems were directing guests to the hotel’s rear entrance have won their battle to have their back gate reopened.

Paragon Hotels, which owns Charingworth Manor Hotel near Chipping Campden, had asked Cotswold District Council to lift a 20-year-old restriction, which meant they had to keep the rear entrance to the hotel shut.

The hoteliers said 25 per cent of new guests were being directed to the hotel’s rear entrance and it was more dangerous for them to have to negotiate their way back to the hotel’s main entrance.

The council received 65 letters from local residents objecting to the lifting of the restriction on the grounds that it would lead to more traffic using the narrow lane between Charingworth and Ebrington.

Despite the objections and following a site visit, members of CDC planning committee agreed to the re-opening of the back gate as an entrance only for a period of 18 months to see the affect on traffic.
