A RETAIL company that has a food store in Moreton has won its ninth national award this year.

Warner’s Budgens, which also has stores in Broadway and Bidford-on-Avon, beat Morrison’s, Kellogg’s, Asda and other top retail industry names to win the coveted Unilever Award for Social Innovation at the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) awards presentation in London.

It was Budgens’ Sustainable Community Plan that impressed the judges who presented the award, which goes to the company that demonstrates it is doing well by doing good.

Budgens supports local food suppliers by stocking more than 700 locally produced items at any one time.

Each of Budgens’ stores has adopted its local primary school and along with its suppliers has devised a week-long project giving children an insight into how bread is made.

Other community projects include running popular seasonal lunches with local restaurants to raise money for local charities and sponsoring junior football club end-of-season awards in each of the three towns where its stores are located.

Budgens’ Guy Warner said: “We are absolutely thrilled to win this prestigious award.

“We were up against some big names in the retail industry, so it’s great to be recognised for the work we do in the community.”
