Police crack down on underage drinking in Campden

POLICE are cracking down on underage drinking in Chipping Campden.

They have teamed up with Cotswold District Council, Chipping Campden Town Council and two local licensees to launch a campaign to tackle the problem.

Officers from Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Safer Community Team (SCT) visited High Street’s One Stop and the Co-Op stores to remind shoppers it is illegal to buy booze for children.

Police Constable Caroline Paxford said: “Research has shown that in some cases of underage drinking the children have been bought the drink by adults, which is known as proxy purchasing.

“Often the adult has not realised that it is against the law to do this, so we hope this campaign will educate people about the law, especially with the long, hot, summer holidays coming up.”
