NEW speed gates have been installed in Bourton-on-the-Water after figures showed almost 40 percent of drivers would be caught by a speed camera.

Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, Liberal Democrat councillor for the village at Gloucestershire County Council has used his county councillor's pot of highways money to reduce speeding in Rissington Road.

This was after Gloucestershire Highways undertook surveys on the road over a week in summer 2017, on behalf of the village speedwatch team.

The figures stated that an average of 3700 vehicles per day drove through along the stretch of Rissington Road near Little Rissington.

Of these, 2771 were reported to be exceeding the speed limit of 30 mph, 1476 were exceeding 35 mph, 454 were exceeding 40 mph and 60 were exceeding 50 mph according to the figures.

Cllr Hodgkinson, the Liberal Democrat leader at the county council said: "The new speed gates have just been installed at the edge of Bourton on the Rissington Road.

"This is as a result of money I’ve given to this from my county councillor’s pot of highways money called ‘Highways Local’.

"This is really good news and it all started when I called a residents meeting last year (February 2017) to address their concerns about speeding traffic in the village, especially on the Rissington Road,

"Since that meeting, a really good speedwatch team has been set up in the village and a 20mph zone has been installed in the central village area.

"Of course, these individual measures help promote road safety but I know a lot of villagers feel strongly about this and want to feel safer as they cross the roads, walk on pavements with children and cycle.”
