A CAMPAIGN to help older people and those with long-term conditions during colder weather is being supported by Sandwell Council.

The local authority is getting behind the Stay Well This Winter campaign – a joint initiative from NHS England and Public Health England – which has come up with a number of ways people over 65 or those who have a long-term health conditions can help keep themselves warm.

Councillor Elaine Costigan, cabinet member for public health and protection, said: “The cold weather can be problematic for some of us. We want all our residents to stay warm and keep well this winter.

“Sandwell Council in partnership with Warm Zone can help home owners who are most at risk from the cold to keep their homes warm this winter.

“The Warm Zone team is available to advise homeowners on whether they are eligible for free central heating and insulation, as well as providing tips on how to save money by conserving energy in the home.”

Is it being advised that people at risk should:

  • Keep warm in winter – both inside and outdoors in a bid to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression.
  • Heat homes to at least 18°C (65°F), with the living room being slightly warmer if preferred.
  • At the first sign of a cough or a cold get help from your pharmacist before it gets more serious. Check with your pharmacist about getting medicines in stock.
