PUPILS from Longborough CE Primary School near Moreton-in-Marsh got a free trip to the Royal International Air Tattoo thanks to their technology skills.

Dan Oxton and Jacob Brewerton of the school made a land yacht that won them a place in the final of the STEMworks/RAF Charitable trust KNEX challenge, which was held at the air show at RAF Fairford on Friday.

After enjoying a display by the Red Arrows, the boys were challenged to build a vehicle suitable for delivering humanitarian aid to remote locations, made a presentation to the judges, who were the Red Arrows' engineering team, and raced their land yacht.

A school spokesman said: "The boys did extremely well in a tough competition, and judges were very impressed with their design and the reasoning behind their choices.

"The boys came second in the presentation prize, and we are all so very proud of them. Well done, lads.

"As a treat, the whole school came to the Air Tattoo to support them and we have been blown away by their inspiration and intelligent questioning to all the pilots and engineering scientists and professionals. Hopefully we have a few aeronautical engineers in the making."
