AN Olympic champion inspired children at their sports day.

Children at St Catharine's Primary School, Chipping Campden, welcomed Olympic gold medallist Matt Gotrel MBE to their annual sports day.

Mr Gotrel a former pupil of the school, who claimed gold with the men's eight coxed rowing squad at the Rio Olympics in 2016, joined parents as they cheered the children on in an array of field and track events.

The children took on their challenges in an emphatic fashion to secure those essential points for their respective houses: Dunstan, Chad, Bede and Beckett.

Bede lead the teams at the end of the sprint track events, but surging ahead with star performances on the field and year 6 teams’ 800m track events, Dunstan were announced 2017 house champions with 2989 points.

Anita Dee, acting head teacher, said: “It’s been a wonderful sports event, enjoyed by the children and parents. We were thrilled to welcome Matt back to St Catharine’s to help inspire our students.

"Judging by the children’s sprinting, throwing and jumping achievements there is great potential for another St Catharine’s pupil to follow in Matt’s Olympic title winning footsteps.”
