A POPULAR Cotswold sport will be held this year despite the cancellation of Robert Dover's Olimpick Games.

Shin kicking will take place at The Volunteer Inn in Chipping Campden after the pub decided to host the event in their beer garden.

This year's Robert Dover Games was cancelled last month due to a lack of money and volunteers leaving regular visitors disappointed, although it is planned that the games will return next year.

Jenny Wilkinson, manager of the pub said: "The Dover games have been going for so long in Chipping Campden that it would be a great shame if they did not happen at all this year because they are always a good event for the community.

"We wanted to do something and shin kicking has become a big part of the games over the years and it is very popular.

"Also we do not have much space in our beer garden for some of the events, so shin kicking is perfect.

"We are also paying for the band which had already been hired for the day to come and play at the pub on the day.

"There will be a small entrance fee, but all the proceeds go to next year's Robert Dover Games."

The fun event will be run by the same volunteers who organise the event each year at the Cotswold Olimpick Games.

The shin kicking will take place on Sunday June 4 from 1.30pm at the pub on Lower High Street.

The Robert Dover Olympick Games is named after Robert Dover, a lawyer who is believed to have first organised the event in 1612.
