A 33-YEAR-OLD man from Broadway has died after suffering head and chest injuries in a three-car crash.

The man, who had been driving a red Citroen C5, was airlifted to University Hospital Coventry after the smash near the junction with the B4081 to Chipping Campden, on the morning of Friday, October 14.

Firefighters worked for 40 minutes to free the injured driver from the car's wreckage, while paramedics and a doctor administered advanced trauma care.

However, the man later died at Coventry Hospital on Monday, October 17.

A 31-year-old man, who was driving a black Volkswagen Golf, remains in a critical but stable condition at Southmead Hospital in Bristol with serious internal injuries.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS), which attended the scene, said: "A WMAS off-duty paramedic came across the collision and stopped to render aid with fellow bystanders.

"The driver of one vehicle involved was in a serious condition and had sustained multiple injuries. Ambulance staff and the doctor administered advanced trauma care to stabilise his condition whilst the fire service worked around the team to extricate him from the wreckage.

"The man was cut free from the vehicle after around 40 minutes and fully immobilised before being airlifted to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

"The other occupants of the vehicle involved were assessed but didn’t require hospital treatment."

A passenger in a silver Peugeot 206 was taken to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford as a precaution, while the driver and two other passengers were taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with non-serious injuries.

Two ambulances, a responder paramedic, a MERIT trauma doctor - all from WMAS - attended the scene, along with the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulances and the South Western Ambulance Service.

The road was shut for several hours while Gloucestershire Constabulary conducted an investigation into the crash and recovered the vehicles.

Worcestershire County Council tweeted to say the A44 Fish Hill, near Broadway, was shut due to an accident and diversions were in place.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to contact them on 101, quoting incident 42 of 14 October.
