ONE of Britain's favourite fruits will be celebrated when the Cotswold village of Oddington holds its Strawberry Fayre on Sunday.

The event, held in the field behind the village hall and starting at 1pm, has plenty for all the family, including something or other.

The strawberry naturally takes centre stage at the Everything Strawberry stand, where villagers will be serving up the sweetest and juiciest freshly-picked fruits.

The strawberries will be offered thickly dipped in chocolate, simply served with cream, or oozing out of strawberry cakes and scones - and just for the kids, made into old-fashioned strawberry lemonade. Punnets of fresh strawberries and homemade jam will also be available to buy.

This year, there will be two special events just for the children to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday. They are a King and Queen fancy dress competition and a Decorate a Cupcake for the Queen’s Birthday competition. Ready-made cupcakes will be on parade waiting for all the kids to put their creative talents to the test. There will be lots of prizes and rosettes for the winners, and both competitions are open to children aged three-12.

The North Cotswolds Wind Band will be playing, and there will be lots of traditional stalls to browse through including plants and books, cakes and bakes, raffle, tombola and arts and crafts.

If you fancy something savoury, hot pork and stuffing rolls will be served alongside the ever-popular tipple tent serving Pimms and cider. Otherwise you can just put your feet up and have a cup of tea and a piece of cake.

And the grand family dog show has eight classes to enter including prettiest bitch, most handsome dog and best veteran. Entries are on the day from 1pm, and classes start at 2.30pm. Entry is £1 for each class.

Sue Watkin of the fayre's organising committee said: "In its current form it has only been going three years. We are lucky to have a farmer, Alan Cox, who grows delicious strawberries and lets us pick as many as we want for a fabulous strawberry tea. Now all we need is some sunshine."
