IMPROVEMENTS to the Cotswold rail line, along with more local services and better long distance services to London and Heathrow are to be discussed at a conference organised through train operator Great Western Railway and West Oxfordshire District Council.

Businesses in West Oxfordshire and across the North Cotswolds have been invited to attend a special event designed to improve rail services with around 120 delegates already signed up.

The event, at Witney, is aimed at building a case for improvements.

Rail is seen as being a major driver behind future development with an improved service key to boosting economic activity, creating and retaining jobs and bringing international and regional markets within easy reach.

Rail is also recognised as vital for the development of tourism, encouraging more visitors to venture outside of London and enjoy the attractions of The Cotswolds and beyond via the Cotswold Line.

Organisers are looking to build a business case for funding support to cover the cost of infrastructure improvements such as doubling the line beyond Evesham. The conference will serve as an introduction to demonstrate how working with businesses on a better railway for commuters and leisure travellers alike can benefit the local and regional economy.

Cllr Sir Barry Norton, leader of West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “The further development of the Cotswold Line is essential for continued economic growth in the area.

“We really want to hear from businesses about how it would benefit them directly and this will have a major influence on development going forward.”

The fully subscribed conference at Witney Lakes Resort is being held on Friday February 12 and will be chaired by Lord Faulkner.

It is being supported by Local Enterprise Partnerships, county councils, the Federation of Small Business, the Institute of Directors and chambers of commerce.

GWR Regional Development Manager Tom Pierpoint said: “The event is an opportunity to present a vision for the future of rail from Hereford to Oxford towards London.

“It will discuss improvements already committed and set out the potential for more improvements including faster and more frequent services beyond 2018.”
