JUST over one week to go before Brailes' St George's Church will be filled with floral displays in a 'showstopping' weekend of flowers and music.

The Brailes Flower Festival will see more than 40 villagers and friends prepare more than 25 displays based on songs from British and American hit musicals, with hundreds of hours being spent on the floral creations.

From Lion King, White Christmas and Phantom of the Opera, to Mary Poppins, Chess and Billy Elliot, all the favourite shows will be portrayed in flowers over the Bank Holiday weekend in what is hoped will be a successful fundraising event.

The festival runs from Friday August 28 to Monday August 31.

The church will be open daily from 10.30am to 7.30pm and refreshments will be available throughout the weekend. Everyone is invited to go along and admire the displays.

On Saturday evening, August 29, the church is holding a festival concern at 7.30pm given by the Amicantus Choir who will be singing songs from the shows under the direction of Maddy Evans.

Entry to the flower festival will be free and tickets for the concert will available at the church door on the Saturday evening for £5 each. "Donations from the flower festival and the money from the concert will form a major part of the church’s programme to raise fund for the repair of the south aisle roof of St George’s Church. The cost of repairs to the 14th Century “Cathedral of the Feldon” has been estimated at £50,000. At the last Flower Festival in 2006, we had over 2,000 visitors and nearly £17,000 was raised, so the Brailes Parochial Church Council is working hard to exceed this amount," said Paul Machell, festival co-ordinator.

Details and update of the event can be found on the Brailes Flower Festival Facebook page.
