MORETON Show is encouraging farmers of the future to bring their cattle, sheep, pigs and goats to one of the country's biggest one-day agricultural shows.

Organises are on the look-out for young stock handlers up to the age of 17 to take part in the show on September 5 where coveted titles as well as prize money of up to £100 is up for grabs.

Lynne Parkes, the Moreton Show livestock secretary said: “The young handlers are an up and coming feature of the show world and showing their animals has become a serious business. It’s also increasingly popular and the young farmers coming to Moreton know the competition will be tough.

“It’s something we try to encourage because this is the lifeline of shows like ours. These young farmers are the future. This year, we have a Future Farmers’ Initiative which is aimed at attracting the country’s budding young farmers.”

A new feature this year is the revival of the calf show, for handlers under 16 who will be showing animals under nine months old. These classes were popular some 40 years ago and Moreton Show wants to regenerate their popularity. The calves now join the dairy, continental and native breeds in the cattle class carrying a £100 prize for the overall champion.

Entry for the young handlers across all sections is to be made on show day up to 12 noon and Moreton Show is anticipating interest from all over the UK. With more than 100 entries likely, classes are often divided to cater for the different age groups.

All the details plus tickets are available on the Moreton Show website.
