RESIDENTS of Churchill basked in the spring sunshine as they witnessed the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate one of the village's famous residents.

On March 22 residents celebrated the 200th anniversary of the publication of William Smith's first geological map of England and Wales when Smith was 46.

The plaque had been erected outside Smith's birthplace, Spring Cottage, by the Churchill and Sarsden Heritage Centre with a grant from the Curry Fund.

The unveiling ceremony was carried out by Professor Hugh Torrens, Emeritus Professor at Keele University and William Smith expert.

Details of Smith's life and work can be found in the heritage centre, a tiny former medieval church which has been made into a permanent museum dedicated to him.

The Churchill and Sarsden Heritage Centre is possibly the smallest museum in Oxfordshire and though its walls date to medieval times, its interior boasts state of the art technology with touch screens.

In Churchill a stone memorial sits on the village green in his memory.
