IF you ever sit in the auditorium of the Royal College of Surgeons, in Edinburgh, or grace the Wales Millennium Centre, C-Bay, in Cardiff, with your presence, chances are you will be resting your person on one of Race Furniture's bespoke seating ranges.

The company, based in Bourton and which has been manufacturing theatre and auditorium seating for 60 years, has examples of its bespoke seating all over the UK and closer to home, including Merton College, Oxford and Sainsbury's Botanic Institute, in Cambridge.

Each has been designed for its specific purpose in a range of materials from fabrics to quality leather, steel and oak.

And now plans are to reach far flung places after its latest success.

Race Furniture Limited has secured the acquisition of the design and manufacturing rights of the concourse seating division of Yorkshire-based company WP Eglin Ltd which folded last September.

Eglin’s seating had built up a strong reputation across transport and public area seating and includes furniture for airports, railway stations, bus and ferry terminals and a range of other spaces.

In recent years Eglin has been appointed as a preferred supplier of public area seating around the world. Such prestigious projects include airports at Gatwick, Stansted, Aberdeen and Heathrow. Projects further afield have included airports at Hong Kong, New Delhi, Helsinki, Bahrain, Beijing, and Kuala Lumpar.

Stuart Finlator, managing director with Race Furniture said Race Furniture intended to continue and build on Eglin's legacy. It will continue to produce the current Eglin seating ranges for past, present and future clients and will look to develop new product ranges and concepts in the foreseeable future.

Mr Finlator said: “We were all very disappointed to hear of the recent demise of Eglin Furniture but are honoured to be given the opportunity of carrying the legacy of this respected brand into the future.

"We view the Eglin business to be a natural extension to the seating that Race currently produces for public spaces.

“Race currently employs 20 staff and we are actively looking to recruit more in our metal work and upholstery departments.”
