A NORTH Cotswolds rural cinema is marking the centenary of the First World War with a charity screening of the award-winning film Oh! What a Lovely War.

Proceeds from the showing of the star-studded movie at the Picture Playhouse in Blockley on Thursday, August 28 will be split between Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion.

Picture Playhouse chairman Helene Thompson said: "The First World War began 100 years ago in July 1914 and we thought it was important to commemorate this.

"We hope as many people a possible will support this special screening so that we can raise lots of money for these two charities, which do such important work supporting members of the Armed Forces from all conflicts."

The film version of Oh! What a Lovely War, directed by Richard Attenborough, released in 1969, stars a host of British film and stage actors including Dirk Bogarde, John Geilgud, John Mills, Kenneth More, Ralph Richardson, Maggie Smith and Laurence Olivier.

Based on the acclaimed stage musical by Joan Littlewood, it is the ultimate satire on the First World War and war in general.

"It's a brilliant and repeatedly watchable film, particularly on the big screen," said Mrs Thompson.

Doors and bar for this special screening at St George's Hall, Park Road, Blockley open at 7pm for a 7.45pm start. Tickets cost £3.50 and are available from Blockley Village Shop or by calling 01386 593386 or 700647. Tickets on the door cost £4.
