SUCCESSFUL students at Shipston High School were awarded for their achievements at two special assemblies.

John Round, president of the Shipston Rotary Club, was the special guest of honour for the bronze awards Year 7 assembly on July 4 while Timothy Cox, The Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire, was the special guest in the afternoon for the silver and gold awards for the Year 7 and 8s.

Launched in 2010 with just 33 students managing to complete the awards, the scheme has grown to 215 pupils and recognises education is about more than what happens in the classroom.

Students have to complete a portfolio of work of all their achievements and write a personal statement to be in with a chance of winning bronze, silver and gold awards.

Some youngsters were also highly commended at each level along with some winning a special award for those who have received a Headteacher's special commendation in Years 7, 8 and 9.

Headteacher Jonathan Baker said: "Education is more than what's going on in school time. It's more than academic achievements.

"Things like developing your confidence, your personal skills and character. There's a big emphasis on service to others and the community. The students are absolutely excellent.

"What's nice about it is I don't think any other school is doing anything like this. It's something unique to Shipston. We have something called the 'Shipston spirit' which is what the award is all about.

"We have an official school motto 'You can if you think you can'. Positive mental attitude, the Shipston Award underscore that".
