GLOUCESTERSHIRE County Council’s highways teams are on standby this weekend following a Met Office wet weather warning.

While most of the day should see fine, summery weather, the Met Office is warning that heavy and thundery rain could potentially affect parts of the UK on Saturday.

Forecasters say there could be short bursts of isolated heavy downpours that could arrive from around midnight tonight and last until Saturday afternoon.

The county council is asking people to be prepared for potentially difficult driving conditions and water on the road, but not to be concerned.

Highways teams are monitoring the situation and ready to respond to any weather related incidents.

The county council, the Environment Agency and the Met Office met this week to discuss the potential summer thunderstorms.

The council's highway team also has additional gangs and gully emptiers and jetters on standby to react if they are needed.

Councillor Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood, said: “The nature of the potential downfall could mean that parts of the county miss the wet weather completely. "What we do know is that those heavy downpours will happen what’s more uncertain is the exact location.

"We want to assure people that we are ready and prepared should there be a need for the highways teams to step in.”

People can report any issues on the roads via gloucestershire.gov.uk/reportit by calling 08000 514 514. Weather response updates will also be posted on Twitter via @GlosCC.
