THE standard of adult education in Gloucestershire is on the up, according to the latest Ofsted inspection.

Gloucestershire County Council’s Adult Education Service has been given an overall rating of ‘good’ based on outcomes for learners, teaching learning and assessment and leadership and management.

The result shows a significant improvement from the previous Ofsted report which was 'satisfactory'.

Visual arts came out on top for teaching, learning and assessment and rated as outstanding while Foundation English, Foundation Maths and Community Learning were rated as good and praised for successfully motivating learners.

Managers and teachers were commended for their commitment to supporting learners to gain jobs. Progression from courses in English and mathematics to other courses, such as information and communication technology and business administration, and then into employment is high.

However, the report said outcomes for learners on programmes leading to qualifications require improvement.

There was also not enough teaching, learning and assessment were not outstanding and a small minority requires improvement.

Councillor Paul McLain, cabinet member responsible for adult education, said: “It is really encouraging to see such significant progress for adult education in Gloucestershire. This success is a result of the hard work and commitment demonstrated by everyone involved."
