A 16th century hotel in Stow's iconic Market Square has been bought by new owners.

The 18-bedroom Old Stocks Hotel has sold to the Cockell family, who will be running the hotel as a family business.

Managing director Jim Cockell, who has been in the business for 16 years and will be running it with his father Charles, said the Grade II-listed Old Stocks was the family's first venture as owner.

“I have worked in the Cotswolds before and know the area," he said. "Stow is a great town in a fantastic location close to the principal Cotswolds attractions.

“There is always plenty going on and there is a lot of tourism in and around the area, but there is also an expectation of quality which we aim to deliver.”

Mr Cockell said while it is business as usual for hotel they were planning a blend of modifications to develop the business still further.

“The market is changing and we are seeing increased demand for upgraded or refurbished facilities," he said.

“There is massive interest in the Cotswolds from near and far with visitors from London, Yorkshire and South Wales alongside visitors from America and Japan.

"Over the next 12 months we intend to step up the food and beverage offering, and to renovate the bed rooms whilst ensuring that we maintain the traditional features of the property.

"We will also make immediate improvements, such as introducing Wi-Fi."
