THE chairman of Moreton Town Council will not get a new chain of office, members have decided.

Councillors looked into the possibility of adding names of past chairmen to the current ribbon or even replacing the current chain with a silver one following a proposal from former chairman Colin Hancox.

But members decided it would cost too much money after clerk Heather Sipthorp said a half chain would cost £1,692 or £10 each for individual silver bars to be added to the existing ribbon.

Councillor Ruth Winder said: “It’s an awful lot of money we could spend it on much better things for the town rather than something that’s worn occasionally.”

Councillor Rod Hooper agreed.

“It’s far too much money for us to spend out in this present moment. I’ve worn the ribbon. The ribbon is okay. With that piece on I honestly think it would look a mess.

“I think people know who has been on the town council. I don’t think it’s worth the money.”

Chairman Ali Coggins added: “It’s a lot of money to fork out. It’s beautiful as it is.”
