THE “godfather” of marathon running is gearing up in a bid to smash a new world record — to run seven marathons in seven days, each in under three-and-a-half hours.

Steve Edwards, of Moreton, is training hard for the Enigma Week At The Knees which takes place between Monday, March 17, and Sunday, March 23, around three lakes in Milton Keynes.

The 51-year-old, who is now running in the veteran 50 age category, is hoping to raise as much money as possible for Stow-based Kate’s Home Nursing, which provides care for people in the final stages of a terminal illness.

As previously reported, the grandfather-of-three completed his lifelong dream of running 500 marathons in under three-and-a-half hours, in November 2012.

And back in September, he smashed yet another record for running 600 official marathons in the fastest average finish time of three hours and 18 minutes.

Mr Edwards, who works at Campden BRI, said: “I’ve raised money for big charities throughout my running career and I just thought; let’s do something for local people in the area.

“My wife nurses and she’s volunteered her services for Kate’s. It was only when she came back and started telling me about the people. I thought that sort of thing was provided by the NHS but it’s not.

“The charity needs to raise £250,000 for the year. You hear about some of the stories that Kate has been able to do and it’s quite heartwarming.”

As part of his training, Mr Edwards is taking part in 10 marathons ahead of the challenge including a race in Kent and a double event in Milton Keynes.

He is also going to increase his running from 50 miles to 100 miles a week to ensure he is fully prepared.
