FIREFIGHTERS have been visiting stores and supermarkets in the run-up to Christmas to make sure that shoppers are safe.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) is doing the annual inspection at shops across the county, checking that fire safety is up to standard during the busiest time of year for businesses.

At this time of year, shops often have more stock than usual and officers have been checking that exit routes are clear.

They are also ensuring fire alarms are in good working order and that all staff have had the correct fire safety training.

Chief Fire Officer Jon Hall said: “Many shops and businesses rely on the festive period to provide a welcome increase in trade.

"While Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service welcomes this boost for local business, we will not accept any compromise on safety of the shopping public or staff.”

Councillor Will Windsor-Clive, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure, said: “This is the busiest time of the year for most shops in Gloucestershire so it’s more important than ever that owners keep to fire safety laws.

"With the right precautions in place, they can ensure that shopping at Christmas time is as safe and as easy as possible.”
