Dame Janet breaks ankle in car crash
12:00pm Thursday 17th October 2013 in News
THE Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire Dame Janet Trotter is recovering in hospital after crashing her car in the Cotswolds.
Police were called at about 1.20pm on Saturday to the A429 between Stow and Moreton near the Broadwell junction, after a black Land Rover left the road and collided with a tree. No other vehicle was involved.
The 69-year-old was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and it is expected she will be unable to perform her duties for several weeks after suffering a broken ankle.
Diana Porter had just received the British Empire Medal from Dame Janet in a presentation at Tithe Barn, Bourton House, Bourton-on-the- Hill when she came across the accident.
“We were there two cars after it had happened,”
she said. “There were people who had already stopped. I think the car flipped. She had a brand new Land Rover.
“I really appreciated her coming and I do wish her a speedy recovery.”
Pete Bungard, chief executive of Gloucestershire County Council, said: “We wish her a rapid recovery and understand that Dame Janet is recovering well and expects to return home in the next few days.”
Robert Bernays, Vice- Lord Lieutenant, who is taking on the major events on Dame Janet’s diary until she has recovered, said she was doing well.
“She is cheerful and hopes to be home later in the week,” he said. “She will not be able to resume her duties for some time because of mobility problems.
Her injuries include a broken ankle and she will have to rest it.”
Dame Janet, who became Lord Lieutenant in 2010, is former vice-chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire, and chairwoman of the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust.
The Lord Lieutenant's duties include planning and conducting all royal visits to Gloucestershire as well as representing the county at events.
