Red Baron set for a fete date
10:40am Friday 20th September 2013 in News
THE spectacular stunt pilot who earned the nickname ‘the Red Baron’ after his daredevil displays over several Vale villages is being welcomed back by one – as part of a fete.
Richard Goodwin hit the headlines after he began practising his aerobatics in a striking red aircraft earlier this summer, revealing his identity to the Journal amid a flurry of interest in his activities.
His displays caused both delight and dismay in fairly equal measure but one villager in Fladbury decided Mr Goodwin would make a fantastic addition to their fete programme.
Alice Jennings, who is part of the Friends of Fladbury and is leading the fete committee, said she had the idea after seeing Mr Goodwin flying overhead.
She said: “I had seen the story about him in the Journal and we have seen him flying overhead. I said I wonder if he would be practising on the day of the fete, wouldn’t that be wonderful? So I contacted him.
“The fete was originally just going to be a break-even nice day out but Mr Goodwin suggested we raise money for the Worcestershire Breast Unit. We are now aiming to raise £600.
”It will be really nice to see the fruits of all his practising in a display and maybe this will also help to offset some of the grumbles from people that he is prepared to do something for our little village.”
And the Red Baron himself said he was looking forward to raising some much-needed funds for the Worcestershire Breast Unit.
He said: “I want people to come along and raise money for the breast care unit. The flying has been going well. I always had faith in the aeroplane.
I have done the Clacton and Dawlish air shows.”
The fete takes place on Saturday between 2pm and 4.30pm on Fladbury playing fields. Mr Goodwin will also be performing at the Malvern Autumn Show which takes place on September 28 and 29.
