It's 'heaven on earth' in Chippy, says councillor
THE possibility that Chipping Norton could be included in a book of so-called “crap towns”
has left a town councillor up in arms.
As previously reported in the Journal, the town has been put on the shortlist as one of the worst 100 places to live in the UK for a follow-up to the book Crap Towns, published a decade ago.
Crap Towns Returns – Back by Unpopular Demand will be published next month.
But after reading the story in the Journal, town councillor Tahirul Hasan said he was outraged at Chippy’s inclusion on the shortlist.
“I’m absolutely disgusted with this,” he said. “I’ve lived here for a quarter of a century. It’s a wonderful place. I’ve decided to live here for the rest of my life.
“It’s heaven on earth in Chipping Norton. Crime levels are very low. I’ve run businesses for a quarter of a century in the town and I haven’t found any problems.”
Oxford, Banbury, Stratford and Bicester also appear on the list. Which towns are included in the book will not be known until it is published in October.
Mr Hasan, who set up a monthly street clean-up in the town in 2011 and owns his own taxi firm, said he felt the listing would also be bad for trade.
“It’s very bad for businesses in the town and gives a bad name for our people who have lived a lifetime in Chipping Norton,” he said. “The book is very bad for the town. People from outside our town will see this as being one of the worst towns in the UK and won’t be buying houses here. I absolutely condemn this.”
Author of the book Sam Jordison has previously said that inclusion is “mainly decided by vote”.
“There’s also the fact that the best entries attract the most attention so in a way appearing in the book is a compliment," he added.
