A BIDFORD girl has renamed one of the gritters from Warwickshire County Council’s fleet after winning a competition.

Katie Bevan, aged nine, from Bidford Primary School, won the countywide contest to come up with a name for one of the trucks with ‘Gracie Gritter’.

The winning entry, chosen by Councillor Peter Butlin, who is in charge of highways and transport, and strategic director for communities Monica Fogarty, not only means a new name for the truck but the school was given a new iPad and Katie went home with a £20 gift voucher.

Coun Butlin said: “The competition has helped to raise awareness of the fantastic work our drivers do in all conditions and at all times of the day and night.”

The competition comes shortly after concerns were raised that not enough gritting was done outside schools during the cold snap.

Coun Peter Barnes said it had been a worry around some schools, including Welford-on-Avon Primary School which had to be shut due to dangerous road conditions. He said: “Schools will now be gritted at the same time as the main roads provided it is term time. There was a problem but I think it has been resolved.”
