THE inaugural meeting of the Chipping Norton Yacht Club (CNYC) has been hailed a “stunning success” by organisers.

More than 80 members sat down for dinner last Wednesday which was held at the town’s golf club, in London Road.

Trevor Taylor, commodore of the CNYC, said the response had been terrific.

“Our members come from the Cotswolds and beyond, not just from Chippy,” he said. “In fact five counties are represented by our 100- plus members and not one of those counties has a coastline.”

At the packed meeting Mr Taylor announced the yacht club would be split into the Solent Section and the Ionian Section.

“It is perhaps not surprising that a lot of members keep their boats on the south coast and during the summer we will be organising rallies for them in the Solent,” he said.

“What is perhaps more surprising is that many members have their boats in Greek waters and there will be a little bit of Chipping Norton in the Ionian this summer when yacht club members meet for a rally among the Greek islands.”

Residents with a keen interest in sailing and boats can become a member of the club which meets every last Wednesday of the month.

The next meeting is on February 27 with the guest speaker Chris Jeckells, managing director of east coast sail makers Jeckells Sails.
