Mencap opens holiday home

A NEW holiday home for people with learning disabilities has been opened in Evesham.

The facility at Ash Grove, off Davies Road, has been set up by Heart of England Mencap.

The house has six bedrooms and accommodation for one member of staff and will allow the charity to support more people with learning disabilities and their families.

Heart of England Mencap purchased the property over the summer as part of its growth strategy, which will see it offering a wider range of services across Worcestershire and Warwickshire.

The new property was officially opened by Ruth Daniell, a Mencap customer who cut the ribbon with Helena Wallis, Heart of England Mencap’s interim chief executive, last month.

The opening was also attended by the Mayor of Evesham, Coun Robert Raphael, accompanied by the Mayoress, Coun Diana Raphael.

Ms Wallis said: “It is our purpose and vision to provide people with learning disabilities the opportunities to choose how they live their lives.

“This new facility in Evesham helps us to achieve those aims by improving the range of accommodation we can offer and maximises the impact we have on the lives of people we support and their families. We are really excited to have extended our short break and respite services into Worcestershire.

“Our existing Stratford short break property has five bedrooms and is often fully booked.

“With Ash Grove in place we can now offer our service to more people, plus give them a choice of where to take their holiday. The new property is also more easily accessible to families living in Worcestershire.”
