GENEROUS shoppers at Tesco in Stow raised £600 after staff members took part in the Cycle to Lapland challenge.

Nineteen-year-old customer assistant Tom Stockdale pedalled 1,400 miles on his titanium bike, mounted on rollers in the foyer of the store, to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Tom, a semi-professional cyclist who hopes to be selected for the 2016 Olympics, was joined by other staff who upped the overall mileage by taking turns on an exercise bike.

Store manager Suzanne Hawkesford said: “I am extremely proud of the effort put in by Tom and the other staff and grateful to our customers for giving so generously.” The money raised by Tesco stores, distribution centres and offices will be spent on supporting 32 early diagnosis and detection research projects.
