A MAN had to be rescued from the roof of his car after driving through a flooded road near Pershore.

Two fire crews from Worcester, one from Pershore and an urban search and rescue team from Droitwich were called to Walcot Lane, Drakes Broughton, just before noon last Wednesday after a call from a member of the public.

The man, who was not from the area, was found sitting on the roof of a black Vauxhall Astra and had to be rescued by firefighters. He had tried to drive through the floods and had passed two road closure signs before ending up in six feet of water.

West Mercia Police said: “Officers have spoken to the driver and given him words of advice. As his car ended up in six feet of water I don’t think he will be doing it again. It’s a lesson to be learned for other drivers who might be tempted to drive through a flooded road that’s been closed off by police or highways.”

Sergeant Matt Hooley, operations planning officer, said: “Every time we have flooding problems, we experience a small but significant number of drivers ignoring road closure signs and driving through flooded roads.

“We do not have the resources to staff all the closures with police officers and where closures have been staffed by PCSOs and highways officers, we have even seen some drivers ignoring them.”
