Severn at Upton is due to peak - as far as we can tell at the moment - at 5.3m Tuesday, which is some way off the 5.93m that hit the town's properties and the riverside in July 2007.
Like many I have sympathy and understanding for the residents in Kempsey. A tragic failure of technology.
However, I have no sympathy for the drivers, often in pseudo 4x4's who think driving through flood water is some kind of macho act.

Just drove through Upton because of the Hanley road being closed. Sadly, but typically, a few selfish morons are parking illegally and causing traffic chaos in the town. Perhaps at times like this the police should at least put cones out to deter this kind of stupidity.
4:36pm
DRIVERS in Pershore are being told not to ignore closure signs at the town's bridge.
Vehicles that are driving through floodwater on the bridge are creating huge waves that have almost caused flooding in a nearby property.
Trudy Burge, who lives in Pershore, said she saw several vehicles drive through this morning within 15 minutes.
"The poor couple who live in the house at the very bottom of Bridge Street have been frantically bailing out water in their garden in every effort to avoid their house been flooded again.
"The thing is, when these vehicles drive through they are sending huge waves of water everywhere and it's interfering with the Environmental Agency flood defences."
Pershore town clerk Ann Dobbins said: "Everytime someone comes over the bridge they create a wave. There was a manhole below, which has probably moved so it is dangerous."

Fair play to those who went out into Diglis yesterday on the city council teams to bang on doors and get residents aware of the potential, in moving cars etc. I spoke to some of them, they had done - with all the flats near the river/basin -about 200 in total, and said maps did not show all the newly built roads, so they used their common sense. Think about 15 were involved split into districts, from Red Cross, Crisis Support, and the amateur radio network who were doing all the comms.

Regards 4x4's creating a bow wave, that is actually how you *should* drive through deep water, in any vehicle, not just 4x4s. The idea is you create a bow wave which moves along just in front of you, meaning the apparent depth round the front of the vehicle (where air intakes generally are!) is less.
Some vehicles are quite capable of driving safely through quite deep floods. Some drivers are not, whatever their vehicle.

My criticism is that in creating a bow wave, that can knock-on to homes along a road, adding to their misery.
If you look at one of the images above you will see what i am referring to; a house by Pershore bridge was a potential victim of such driving.
